Sayed Abdullah, a boy from the Bala Baluk district of Farah Province, in southwestern Afghanistan, was injured during an American bombing run on May 4, 2009, receiving severe burns and head trauma resulting in some brain damage. Though young Sayed survived, over 100 Afghan civilians were reported dead from the attack.
In an initial operation, doctors treated Sayed’s burns as well as began restorative work on his head injury. Since then, neurologists reviewing his case have recommended further surgery to complete his healing, as well as minimize long-term risks for epilepsy and mental impairment.
Healing Children of Conflict sponsored Sayed’s medical treatment in connection with the highly-regarded Afghan non-governmental organization Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization (AHRDO) and US-based No More Victims. In 2010 HCC funded an initial visit to a hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, for a comprehensive checkup and final treatment recommendation to help with Sayed's long term medical care.
